Museums, historic interiors and covered outings so you do not lose the day.
Updated on October 7, 2026 ✓ Information verified on October 6, 2026 adapted version of the Portuguese original
Rain in Rio usually comes in downpours, especially in summer. Sometimes it passes in an hour; sometimes it lasts all day. Have a plan B.
Indoor outings
- Museum of Tomorrow and the museums on Praça Mauá.
- Royal Portuguese Reading Room.
- Confeitaria Colombo for a long coffee.
- Municipal Theater: a guided tour or a performance.
- Maracanã: a guided tour.
- See the full list in Rio museums.
What to postpone
- Christ the Redeemer and Sugarloaf: in cloud, the view disappears.
- Trails: the rock gets slippery and the park may change opening hours.
- Beach: when the sea is rough, stay on the sand or the promenade.
With children
The Museum of Tomorrow and, in light rain, the Botanical Garden work well. More ideas in Rio with kids.
