Updated on October 6, 2026 ✓ Information verified on October 6, 2026 adapted version of the Portuguese original

Rio can be visited all year. The best time depends on what you want: beach and heat, clear skies for viewpoints or the big festivals.

Seasons (Southern Hemisphere)

  • Summer (December to March): the hottest and rainiest season, with heavy showers in the late afternoon. High season, with New Year’s Eve and Carnival.
  • Autumn (March to June): the heat eases and days tend to be more stable. Good for combining beach and sightseeing.
  • Winter (June to September): milder and drier, with very clear days, great for Christ the Redeemer, Sugarloaf and hikes. The sea gets cooler and cold fronts can bring a few cloudy days.
  • Spring (September to December): temperatures rise and rain increases towards the end of the season.

Historical temperature and rainfall averages are in the climate normals published by INMET, Brazil’s national weather institute.

Events that change everything

  • New Year’s Eve: on 31 December, Copacabana draws millions of people. Hotels get expensive and sell out early.
  • Carnival 2027: Riotur lists the official Sambadrome parades for 7, 8 and 9 February 2027.

Summary

  • Beach and heat: December to March, accepting rain and higher prices.
  • Views, hikes and better prices: May to September.
  • Festivals: New Year’s Eve or Carnival, booking well in advance.

Then pick your base in where to stay.
