Rio Carnival is considered the biggest Carnival in the world, according to the English Wikipedia. It happens on two fronts: the samba school parades at the Sambadrome (Sambódromo) and the street parties, called blocos, all over the city.
2027 dates
- Official Sambadrome parades: scheduled for February 7, 8 and 9, 2027, according to Riotur.
- Technical rehearsals: January 23, 24, 30 and 31, 2027, on the Marquês de Sapucaí, with free entry, according to Riotur.
The running order of the schools and each night’s program are announced by LIESA and Riotur. Check them before buying tickets.
The Sambadrome
The Sambadrome, on Avenida Marquês de Sapucaí, hosts the parades of the Grupo Especial (top league). Tickets range from grandstands to private boxes (camarotes). Buy only through official channels and be wary of resale.
Street blocos
The blocos take over streets in many neighborhoods in the weeks around Carnival. Riotur handles registration and the official bloco schedule. They are free and very crowded.
