By plane
Rio has two main airports:
- Galeão (GIG): Tom Jobim International Airport, on Ilha do Governador, handles international flights.
- Santos Dumont (SDU): on the shore of Guanabara Bay, next to downtown, mostly domestic flights.
Details and connections in Rio’s airports.
From the airport to your hotel
- Official taxi or ride-hailing app: the simplest option, especially with luggage. Use the official points inside the terminal.
- Public transport: from Santos Dumont, the VLT light rail links the airport to downtown; from Galeão, the TransCarioca BRT heads towards Barra. With big bags it is less practical.
By bus
Long-distance buses arrive at the Novo Rio bus station, in the port area. From there, take a taxi or app to your hotel.
By car
Driving and parking in the South Zone is hard. Many visitors return the rental car and use the metro, taxis and apps. See getting around and choose a base in where to stay.
