Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon (Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas) is in the South Zone, between Ipanema, Leblon, Gávea, Jardim Botânico and Humaitá. It connects to the sea through the Jardim de Alah canal. All around it, a walking track and a cycle path draw cariocas early in the morning and in the late afternoon.
What to do
- Walk or cycle around it: the whole loop is flat, with views of Corcovado, Dois Irmãos Hill and Pedra da Gávea.
- Pedal boats: they can be rented at some spots.
- Kiosks: by the water, with outdoor tables.
- Sunset: the Ipanema side catches the late-afternoon light on the water.
Christmas
In December, the Lagoa usually hosts a large floating Christmas tree. Whether it happens and the dates change every year: check that year’s official program.
Getting there
General Osório metro station, in Ipanema, and Cantagalo, in Copacabana, are a few blocks from the Lagoa. By taxi or ride-hailing app, ask for one of the kiosks as a reference point.
Combine it with the Botanical Garden and Ipanema Beach.
Practical tips
- Go early or in the late afternoon.
- Rent a bike to go all the way around.
- At night, stay on the lit stretches.
